26 Feb 2018 20:00 : Morris Dancing in Headington Quarry http://www.folkinoxford.co.uk/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2018/02/26/9078/-/morris-dancing-in-headington-quarry.html http://www.folkinoxford.co.uk/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2018/02/26/9078/-/morris-dancing-in-headington-quarry.html We need new members!
We dance traditional Headington Quarry Morris and some other traditions, using leg bell, sticks and hankerchiefs.
We often dance out during the evening in the spring/summer months, sometimes in the oxford area and sometimes elsewhere.
Morris dancing is an excellent way of keeping fit, and is very sociable too!

If you have an ear for music and fancy joining us, why not come along?
We meet most Monday evenings in the hall in the back garden of the Mason's Arms, Headington Quarry.

Why not have a go?

27 Feb 2018 20:15 : Irish Session http://www.folkinoxford.co.uk/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2018/02/27/6584/-/irish-session.html http://www.folkinoxford.co.uk/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2018/02/27/6584/-/irish-session.html This session started life as a slow irish session at The Rose and Thistle in Haddenham some 8 or 9 years ago with the intention that attendees would be able to learn and practice tunes by playing together from music or by ear.

The group has moved on since those early days but still plays tunes at a slower pace than some other irish sessions.  Newcomers are welcome and music can be provided if needed by contacting Tony beforehand.

The session recently moved to The Chandos Arms in Oakley and meets there on the Fourth Tuesday of the month at 8:15 pm.

03 Mar 2018 19:30 : Ian W Brown at Wychwood Folk Club + support by Pete Watkins http://www.folkinoxford.co.uk/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2018/03/03/9039/-/ian-w-brown-at-wychwood-folk-club-support-by-pete-watkins.html http://www.folkinoxford.co.uk/calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2018/03/03/9039/-/ian-w-brown-at-wychwood-folk-club-support-by-pete-watkins.html It’s 30 years since Ian W Brown decided he stood a better chance of making a living farming pigs in Hampshire than saving the world with song. A year or two later while toiling in the fields he heard The Stone Roses on the radio, fell in love with the band and allowed himself a wry smile that at least one person with his name was living the dream.

But he kept his hand in writing songs before going to work and playing folk clubs when he could. Then, farming being almost as precarious as the record business, he answered the call for Britain’s farmers to diversify by going into the music industry full time. He started out selling line dance CDs, then got into band management, record plugging, recording and song writing.

Since then he has been nominated for an Ivor Novello award for co-writing Sandi Thom’s number one single, ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker’ and the album from which it was taken. He co-wrote the lead song in the long running West End musical ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats’ and has written songs for many artists including Fisherman’s Friends, Show of Hands, Jason Donovan, D Side, Pixie Lott, Graham Gouldman, Henry Priestman, Simon Webbe, Drumsound & Bassline Smith and even Meryl Streep. His songs have been played on Radio 1, Radio 2 Radio 4 and Radio 5 in the last year.  His ambition in 2018 is to conquer Radio 3 and is currently writing a collection of neo classical Zither tunes!
