BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Finalist, UKE Magazine Breakthrough Artist winner and English Folk Expo Mentoring participant, Amelia Coburn is a truly stunning solo performer.
She bears comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Nick Drake with her beguiling original folk and jazz influenced songs, many of which have received national airplay on 6music, BBC Radio 2 and RTE1 in Ireland. She can count Mark Radcliffe and Tom Robinson as big fans – Mark invited her to perform on his curated stage at Knutsford Music Festival and Tom has asked her up to support him at a UK date in November.
Amelia has performed at Cambridge Folk Festival, Focus Wales, Costa Del Folk Ibiza, the Grand Northern Ukulele Festival, and on sell-out solo headline tours in the UK and numerous other events and festivals in Europe (France, Belgium, Germany and Finland) as well as supporting a diverse range of artists including The Trials of Cato, The Wedding Present (Her cover of their classic “My Favourite Dress” is songwriter David Gedge’s favourite cover and she even makes an appearance in David’s autobiography), Track Dogs, Steve Harley and the late folk legend Vin Garbutt. She is fast establishing herself as a truly distinctive voice not to be missed.
Amelia recently finished recording her debut studio album with producer/artist Bill Ryder-Jones (Founding member of The Coral and award-winning producer for Michael Head and the Red Elastic Band, Saint Saviour and Brooke Bentham, amongst others). The lead single, “See Saw” has been described as “magical, mysterious” and “utterly unique”, having already gained national airplay on Roddy Hart’s BBC Scotland show.
Branching out stylistically with her most recent releases and picking up a stick dulcimer for her psychedelic, tribal stomp “Perfect Storm”, which received a good deal of national airplay in the UK, she is a fearless experimenter yet manages to retain her folk and jazz roots throughout. Another recent single, “Dublin Serenade” also received national airplay in the UK and Ireland, while one of her most recent, the fun, jazzy “Cheese Song” is a live favourite and featured members of Madrid-based Track Dogs. In all Amelia takes a fresh look at familiar influences and infuses them with her playful personality but also finds haunted corners to explore making her a unique voice in the world of folk music.
